Hydration is crucial for maintaining optimal health and wellbeing as it plays a pivotal role in various bodily functions. Adequate hydration ensures the proper functioning of organs, helps regulate body temperature, aids in digestion, and supports nutrient transportation. Furthermore, staying hydrated is essential for cognitive function, mood regulation, and overall physical performance. Insufficient hydration can lead to dehydration, which can manifest in symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and even more severe complications like kidney stones or urinary tract infections. Therefore, prioritizing hydration by consuming an adequate amount of water throughout the day is fundamental for maintaining overall health and vitality.

Making electrolytes at home offers a cost-effective and healthier alternative to purchasing commercially available electrolyte drinks. Many store-bought electrolyte beverages contain added sugars, artificial flavours, and colours, which can contribute to an unhealthy diet and may exacerbate certain health conditions like diabetes or obesity. By making electrolytes at home, individuals have control over the ingredients, allowing them to customise the recipe to their preferences and dietary needs. Simple homemade electrolyte solutions can be made using everyday ingredients. Not only does this approach provide a more affordable option, but it also ensures a healthier alternative without compromising on taste or effectiveness, making it a sustainable choice for maintaining hydration and overall wellbeing.

In our quest for optimal health and well-being, we often find ourselves navigating through a sea of options, from conventional medicine to alternative therapies. Amidst this array of choices, one profession stands out for its holistic approach and emphasis on natural remedies: Naturopathy. Naturopaths, with their unique blend of traditional healing methods and modern scientific knowledge, play a vital role in guiding you towards a healthier lifestyle. In this article, we’ll explore the significance of naturopaths in your health journey and shed light on the benefits they offer over conventional General Practitioners (GPs).

Understanding Naturopathy: Holistic Wellness at Its Core

Naturopathy is a form of complementary medicine that focuses on treating the root cause of illnesses rather than just alleviating symptoms. At the heart of naturopathic practice lies the belief in the body’s inherent ability to heal itself given the right conditions. Naturopaths use a combination of natural therapies, such as herbal medicine, nutritional counselling, lifestyle changes, and mind-body techniques, to support and stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanisms.

One of the key principles of naturopathy is treating the individual as a whole, taking into account their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects. Unlike conventional medicine, naturopaths strive to address the connection of various bodily systems and their influence on overall health.

The Role of Naturopaths in Your Health Journey

Personalised Approach: Naturopaths take the time to understand each patient’s unique health history, lifestyle, and goals. Through comprehensive assessments and consultations, they tailor treatment plans to suit individual needs, focusing on promoting long-term health and wellness. No quick fixes here!

Preventive Care: Rather than waiting for symptoms to manifest, naturopaths emphasise preventive measures to maintain health and well-being. By identifying potential imbalances or risk factors early on, they help individuals make proactive lifestyle changes to prevent future health issues.

Education and Empowerment: Naturopaths empower patients by providing them with the knowledge and tools to take control of their health. Through education on nutrition, stress management, exercise, and other lifestyle factors, patients gain a deeper understanding of how their choices impact their well-being.

Integration of Modalities: Naturopaths draw from a diverse range of healing modalities, integrating both traditional wisdom and evidence-based practices. This holistic approach allows them to address a wide spectrum of health concerns, from chronic conditions to acute illnesses, with a focus on restoring balance and vitality.

The Benefits of Choosing a Naturopath Over a GP

Holistic Perspective: While GPs primarily focus on diagnosing and treating specific symptoms or conditions, naturopaths take a holistic view of health, considering the connections of body, mind, and spirit.

Individualised Care: Naturopaths spend more time with patients, conducting thorough assessments and exploring underlying causes of health issues. This personalised approach leads to more tailored treatment plans that address the root cause of illness.

Emphasis on Prevention: Naturopaths prioritise preventive care and lifestyle modifications, helping patients adopt healthy habits that promote overall well-being and reduce the risk of future health problems.

Natural Therapies: Unlike conventional medicine, which often relies on pharmaceutical interventions, naturopathy utilises natural therapies with fewer side effects, such as herbal medicine, dietary supplements, and lifestyle modifications.

Collaborative Care: Naturopaths often work in conjunction with other healthcare providers, including GPs and specialists, to ensure comprehensive and integrated care for patients.

In a world where chronic stress, environmental toxins, and poor lifestyle habits have become the norm, the role of naturopaths in promoting health and wellness is more crucial than ever. By embracing the principles of holistic healing and individualised care, naturopaths empower individuals to embark on a transformative health journey—one that fosters balance, vitality, and resilience from the inside out. So, whether you’re seeking relief from a chronic condition, looking to optimise your health, or simply striving for a greater sense of well-being, consider incorporating the expertise of a naturopath into your healthcare regimen. After all, true wellness begins with nurturing the body, mind, and spirit in harmony with nature.

In our modern, technology-driven world, it’s easy to lose touch with the natural rhythms of the Earth. Grounding, also known as earthing, is a practice that offers a simple yet incredible way to reconnect with the Earth’s energy, promoting so many health benefits for both body and mind. In this article, we’ll look into the concept of grounding, explore its benefits, and provide practical techniques to incorporate it into your daily routine.

Understanding Grounding:

Grounding is based on the principle that direct contact with the Earth allows us to absorb its subtle electrical charge. This charge, in turn, has a balancing and harmonising effect on the body’s electromagnetic field. By reconnecting with the Earth’s energy, we can counteract the imbalances caused by modern lifestyles and technology.

Benefits of Grounding:

Reduces Inflammation: Grounding has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help alleviate chronic pain and promote faster healing.

Improves Sleep: By restoring natural circadian rhythms and reducing stress levels, grounding can improve the quality of sleep and enhance overall restfulness.

Boosts Energy Levels: Many individuals report feeling more energized and revitalized after grounding sessions, thanks to the influx of electrons from the Earth.

Enhances Mood and Mental Clarity: Grounding has been linked to reduced feelings of anxiety and depression, as well as improved cognitive function and mental clarity.

Supports Immune Function: The antioxidant effects of grounding may help strengthen the immune system, making the body more resilient to illness and disease.

How to Ground Yourself:

Walking Barefoot: One of the easiest ways to ground yourself is by walking barefoot on natural surfaces such as grass, sand, or soil. Take a leisurely stroll in a park or in your backyard, allowing your feet to make direct contact with the Earth.

Earthing Mats: Consider using earthing mats, which are designed to mimic the effects of walking barefoot on the ground. These mats can be placed under your desk or sleeping area to maintain continuous contact with the Earth’s energy.

Outdoor Activities: Engage in outdoor activities such as gardening, hiking, or yoga in nature. Spending time outdoors not only allows for grounding but also provides opportunities for relaxation and stress relief.

Water Grounding: Take advantage of bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, or oceans for grounding. Swimming or simply dipping your feet into the water can help create a connection with the Earth’s energy.

Visualizations: Incorporate visualization techniques into your grounding practice. Close your eyes and imagine roots extending from your feet deep into the Earth, anchoring you to its energy and stability.

Grounding is a simple yet really powerful practice that offers so many benefits for overall health and well-being. By reconnecting with the Earth’s energy, we can restore balance to our bodies and minds, leading to improved vitality and resilience. Now this isn’t all just some new health fad to follow it is a scientifically proven health benefit. I would recommend tuning in to podcast like “The Ultimate Human” by Gary Brecka, and listen to what he has to say about grounding.

Whether through walking barefoot, using earthing mats, or engaging in outdoor activities, incorporating grounding into your daily routine can bring about profound transformations in your health and vitality. Try it for 5-10 minutes before bed everynight and see how your sleep changes. You wont regret it!

So, imagine this glossary as your personal health cheat sheet – a collection of words to help you decode the confusion of the words and phrases you will hear a lot. It’s like having a dictionary that spills the tea on terms like “histamine,” “SIBO,” and “Gut Microbiome,” making it way easier to navigate the health conversation without feeling like you need a medical degree. So, next time someone drops a symptom or diagnosis you’ll be armed with the knowledge to nod knowingly and maybe even impress with your knowledge.

SIBO

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) is a digestive disorder characterized by an excessive growth of bacteria in the small intestine, disrupting the normal balance of gut microflora. This overgrowth can lead to various symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and malabsorption of nutrients.

SIFO

SIFO stands for Small Intestinal Fungal Overgrowth, a condition characterized by an overgrowth of fungi, such as Candida, in the small intestine. This can lead to various gastrointestinal symptoms, including bloating, gas, abdominal pain, and disturbances in nutrient absorption, resembling some aspects of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).

Histamine

Histamine is a neurotransmitter and a biogenic amine produced in the body, playing a crucial role in various physiological processes, such as regulating stomach acid, immune responses, and neurotransmission. In excessive amounts, histamine release can contribute to allergic reactions, causing symptoms like itching, inflammation, and increased mucus production.

Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance is a condition where the body has difficulty breaking down and metabolizing histamine, leading to an accumulation of this neurotransmitter in the system. Individuals with histamine intolerance may experience symptoms such as headaches, hives, digestive issues, and respiratory problems, as the excess histamine can trigger an exaggerated response in sensitive individuals.

Gut Microbiome

The gut microbiome refers to the diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and archaea, that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. This complex ecosystem plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, immune system modulation, and overall health, influencing various physiological processes in the human body.

MTHFR

MTHFR, or methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, is an enzyme that plays a key role in the methylation process, which is essential for the conversion of folate into its active form, methylfolate. Genetic variations in the MTHFR gene can impact this conversion process, potentially leading to reduced methylation capacity and affecting various physiological functions, with potential implications for cardiovascular health, neurological development, and detoxification pathways.

Hello! My name is Elisa & I am currently on a journey of healing from SIBO, histamine intolerance, food sensitivities, skin issues & everything else caused by these gut issues.

My biggest aim with this blog is to make it easier for anyone else having these gut health issues to find help from someone going through it. I want to help with ideas for food, how to make lifestyle changes, resources to assist you & general advice from my own experiences. Tummy troubles don’t have to be your life and I hope I can help you while your going through it!

The journey begins…

Intolerance

I’ve has issues with eating things like dairy and lactose for a long time now, then certain wines became an issue for me, different meat was making me sick and then gluten began causing a lot of discomfort as well. Everything ended up being problematic for me and I found myself having to think about what I was doing the next day to see what I could risk eating. Food became insanely stressful (which probably made it all worse) and when the biggest issues started happening I developed a fear of eating and lived of gluten free oats made into porridge with almond milk, yummy but not nutritious at all!

Hormones

I chose to go off the pill after about 10 years of being on it purely for my health as I wanted to start getting rid of unnecessary toxins in my body. I used the help of natural remedies and products to try balance things out and get my cycle back to normal (whatever that was) and what a rollercoaster that was. It was fine one minute and horrible the next, super heavy, painful and exhausting. After a while I went to the drs to have bloods done as I was so insanely exhausted but everything was apparently fine. After seeing a nutritionist who did some bio energetic testing on me she found quite an array of things that could be to blame. My thyroid was having issues along with toxins being present in my body that was creating a very out of whack cycle and a lot of exhaustion.

Parasite & Gut illnesses

I remember having giardia as a kid after a school camp, there was a lot of fun while mucking around in mud that didn’t end well for me. I had gastro quite a bit between the years of 19-28. When I was around 21 I went on a trip around the US having a stop off in Mexico, which was amazing but that last meal as we left decided to give me a parasite and I spend 3 days in bed in Las Vegas unable to eat or consume anything really after being violently ill all night one night to the point my now husband had to carry me off the bathroom floor and back to bed. Ever since then I started having more and more issues that slowly got worse.

Histamine

Now this is a weird one! After seeing a nutritionist as I already was having gut and health issues, the nasty thing that is a histamine intolerance decided to really give me hell. Through having bioenergetic testing done through my nutritionist we began clearing bad things out of my system including a parasite as mentioned above. After that I started getting some very uncomfortable pain after eating. About 1-1.5hrs after a meal I would start getting what I described as “the feeling of a metal pole being rammed through my middle abdomen” which I later found out was my pancreas. Along with that I was having hot sweats, headaches, the small amount of dermatitis on my face got worse, hives, itches, moments of light headedness, vertigo, tingly body parts and overall just felt like absolute shit to be honest. I missed a lot of work because I stopped eating much out of fear and what I was eating had next to no nutritional value for me as it bland. I went to the drs and to be honest they weren’t much help. Tested me for parasites, helicobactor (h-pylori), checked my pancreas and gallbladder function through blood tests and had an abdomen ultrasound. All supposedly coming back totally normal and “baseline”. I was told to eat bland food till I felt better and then go back to normal. My nutritionist was the only person willing to help me through this as I stayed in touch with her the whole time and she assured me we would figure it out. The bioenergetic testing saved me and histamine came up again and again getting stronger each time. Because my symptoms where becoming debilitating I began seeing the naturopath at the same clinic as the nutritionist and together they helped me get to where I am now.

SIBO

After many tests, Drs thinking I was nuts, pain, discomfort and a lot of weight loss and lack of eating we finally figured it out. I have SIBO. I have never been so happy to get positive test results back before because I finally had an answer and I no longer felt insane and like it was all in my head! So all the bloating, pain, diarrhoea, skin issues, fatigue, the list goes on and is all being caused by this thing called SIBO. For me I started with quite high levels of hydrogen and methane SIBO so it explained so much and seems to be the root cause of all of my other issues.

MTHFR

Throughout having Bioenergetic testing done and then seeing a naturopath within the same clinic so they could work together, they both agreed that I should have MTHFR testing done as they were both very sure I had at least one of the gene mutations. Well they were correct, and I have 2 MTHFR gene mutations. Know what does that mean? Great question, I will expand on that in another post as I will with all of the other issues mentioned above.

Currently…

Well I’m doing a hell of a lot better now I can tell you that much! I’m still 10ish kgs down from the start of this but I’m starting to feel like myself again. I’m not out of the woods yet, I still have a long way to go to be fully healed from all of these things. I’m working on it all with the guidance of 2 amazing women, a naturopath and a nutritionist who together have assisted me to be eating a symptom reducing diet, supplementing me with the correct things I am in need of and the right things to clear out the SIBO and histamine issues while trying to live a normal life. They have also helped me to know I’m not alone as they have other clients who are having similar issues with all the above that I’ve mentioned. I am trying to practice lots of self care and look after myself in and out as its so important to have everything working I together.

My goal with this blog is for people like me to find information and resources. I want to help you to realise you aren’t weird or imagining these things and that these aren’t issues that a lot of GP’s test for or are maybe aware of. I’ve chosen to go down the lines of a natural approach but there are ways to do this with a GP as well. Your treatment is up to you and if you don’t feel right then you need to pursue it and trust how you feel, don’t let someone tell you your fine when you know your not.

I am NOT a health care professional in any way so I will not recommend or talk about the supplements I use or have used as they where all prescribed to me by professionals and I think anyone going through these issues should do so with the help of a professional. I will list as many resources I can find and will always update them because one size does not fit all. I will recommend practitioners and online courses but never medication, as I’ve said I am not a healthcare professional.

We’ve all heard the advice to “stay hydrated,” but do we really know how important it is? In the craziness of daily life, it’s easy to forget just how essential staying hydrated is for our overall well-being, especially when it comes to digestion. So, let’s jump into why hydration is crucial and how it affects your health and digestion.

Why Hydration Matters?

Water helps to keep everything running smoothly and here’s a few reasons why staying hydrated is a game-changer for your health:

1. Efficient Digestion:
Ever experienced that sluggish, bloated feeling after a big meal? Dehydration can contribute to slower digestion, as your body relies on water to break down food and absorb nutrients. When you’re well-hydrated, food moves through your digestive system more smoothly, reducing the chances of discomfort and constipation.

2. Nutrient Transportation:
Think of water as your body’s delivery system for nutrients. It carries vital vitamins and minerals to cells, aiding in various bodily functions. Without enough water, this transportation system becomes less efficient, potentially depriving your body of essential nutrients.

3. Waste Removal:
Proper hydration supports the removal of waste and toxins from your body through urine and sweat. When you’re dehydrated, your kidneys struggle to filter waste effectively, which can lead to kidney stones and other health issues.

4. Heart Health:
Dehydration can make your blood thicker, forcing your heart to work harder to pump it through your arteries. This extra strain can increase your risk of heart-related problems.

5. Energy Boost:
Feeling fatigued? Dehydration can zap your energy levels. Staying hydrated helps maintain optimal blood volume and circulation, keeping you feeling more energized throughout the day.

6. Skin Health:
Your skin loves water! Adequate hydration helps keep your skin supple and radiant. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to dryness, premature aging, and an increased risk of skin conditions.

7. Brain Function:
Your brain is over 70% water, so it’s no surprise that dehydration can affect cognitive function. Even mild dehydration can impair focus, concentration, and mood.

8. Weight Management:
Sometimes your body confuses thirst with hunger, leading you to eat when you’re actually just thirsty. Staying hydrated can help control unnecessary snacking and support weight management.

Tips for Staying Hydrated:

Carry a reusable water bottle with you throughout the day.

Set reminders on your phone to take water breaks.

Flavour your water with slices of fruit or a splash of lemon for added taste.

Consume water-rich foods like fruits and vegetables.

Be mindful of your body’s signals for thirst, and respond promptly.

In a nutshell, staying hydrated isn’t just a piece of health advice; it’s a cornerstone of your well-being. It impacts everything from your digestion to your energy levels, and even the health of your skin and heart. So, the next time you reach for a glass of water, remember that you’re not just quenching your thirst; you’re nourishing your body in countless ways. Cheers to good health!

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the importance of self-care. We often prioritise work, family, and social commitments over taking care of ourselves. However, neglecting self-care can have a significant impact on our overall health, especially our gut health. I want to explore the relationship between self-care and gut health, and why making self-care a priority can be a game-changer for your well-being.

The Gut-Brain Connection

Before we dive into the significance of self-care, it’s essential to understand the gut-brain connection. Our gut, often referred to as the “second brain,” plays a crucial role in our overall health. It’s not merely responsible for digesting food; it also communicates with our brain through a network of nerves and hormones.

Gut Health and Mental Well-being

Poor gut health has been linked to various mental health issues, including anxiety and depression. When you’re stressed or anxious, it can negatively impact your gut, leading to discomfort and digestive problems. On the other hand, an unhealthy gut can send signals to your brain that may contribute to mood disorders.

The Role of Self-Care

This is where self-care comes into play. Practices like meditation, deep breathing, and mindfulness can help reduce stress and anxiety. When you prioritise self-care, you’re indirectly supporting your gut health by promoting a calmer, more balanced state of mind.

Nutrition and Gut Health

Eating Mindfully

Self-care isn’t just about pampering yourself; it also involves making conscious choices about what you put into your body. Eating mindfully, which means paying attention to what you eat and savoring each bite, can significantly benefit your gut health.

The Importance of a Balanced Diet

A diet rich in fibre, lean proteins, and probiotic-rich foods like yogurt and sauerkraut can promote a healthy gut microbiome. A diverse and balanced diet provides essential nutrients for the beneficial bacteria in your gut, helping them thrive. Remember though to follow diets specific to your intolerances and goals along with enlisting the help of professionals to ensure you are receiving the correct nutrition.

Avoiding Gut Disruptors

On the flip side, self-care means avoiding or minimising the consumption of gut disruptors like processed foods, excessive sugar, and alcohol. These can negatively impact the delicate balance of your gut microbiota.

Exercise and Gut Health

Physical Activity and Gut Microbiota

Regular exercise has numerous health benefits, and one of them is supporting a healthy gut. Exercise has been shown to increase the diversity of gut bacteria, which is associated with better overall health.

Self-Care Through Movement

Exercise can be a form of self-care in itself. Whether it’s yoga, jogging, or dancing, engaging in physical activity not only keeps your gut healthy but also releases endorphins that boost your mood and reduce stress.

Sleep and Gut Health

The Sleep-Gut Connection

Quality sleep is a cornerstone of self-care and is closely linked to gut health. When you’re sleep-deprived, it can lead to imbalances in your gut microbiome, potentially causing digestive problems.

Prioritising Rest

Self-care involves making sleep a priority. Establishing a bedtime routine, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and getting enough restorative sleep can positively influence your gut health and overall well-being.

Stress Management

Chronic Stress and Gut Health

Chronic stress is a silent enemy of gut health. It can lead to inflammation in the gut, disrupt the gut-brain axis, and contribute to a host of digestive issues.

Self-Care as Stress Relief

Practices like meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and spending time in nature are excellent ways to manage stress. By incorporating stress-reduction techniques into your self-care routine, you can protect your gut health from the harmful effects of stress.

The Gut-Immune System Connection

Immune Function and Gut Health

A robust immune system relies on a healthy gut. Your gut is home to a significant portion of your immune cells, and a well-balanced microbiome supports their proper function.

Self-Care and Immune Support

Engaging in self-care habits like staying hydrated, consuming immune-boosting foods, and managing stress can fortify your immune system, which in turn supports your gut health.

Conclusion

In conclusion, self-care isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity for maintaining optimal gut health and overall well-being. By prioritizing self-care practices that reduce stress, improve sleep, and promote a balanced diet and physical activity, you can create a harmonious environment for your gut microbiome to thrive.

Remember that self-care is a holistic approach, encompassing not just physical pampering but also mental and emotional well-being. By nurturing yourself in all aspects of life, you’ll be taking a vital step toward achieving a healthy gut and a happier, more balanced life. So, go ahead, treat yourself to that relaxing bath, savor a nutritious meal, or take a leisurely walk in the park – your gut will thank you for it.

Picture this: you’ve been experiencing digestive discomfort, bloating, and perhaps even unexplained weight loss. Your doctor suspects Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) might be the culprit. But how did you end up with SIBO in the first place? Let’s take a closer look at some common ways SIBO can sneak into your gut.

Low Stomach Acid:
One of the primary lines of defense against SIBO is the acidity of your stomach. If you have low stomach acid due to age, medications, or underlying health conditions, it can pave the way for unwanted bacteria to migrate from the stomach into the small intestine, where they don’t belong.

Gastrointestinal Surgery:
Surgical procedures involving the digestive tract, like gastric bypass or bowel surgery, can alter the normal movement of food and bacteria in the gut. This disruption can create an environment where bacteria flourish in the small intestine, leading to SIBO.

Parasites:
Parasites can sometimes trigger SIBO by disrupting the normal balance of bacteria in your small intestine.

Slow Motility:
Your small intestine relies on a rhythmic muscular movement called peristalsis to propel food and bacteria through it. If this movement becomes sluggish due to conditions like diabetes or neurological disorders, it can allow bacteria to linger and multiply.

Dysfunctional Ileocecal Valve:
The ileocecal valve is a crucial checkpoint that separates the small intestine from the large intestine. If it malfunctions, it can enable backflow of bacteria from the colon into the small intestine, triggering SIBO.

Antibiotic Use:
Ironically, while antibiotics are used to combat bacterial infections, they can also disrupt the balance of bacteria in your gut. Overuse or misuse of antibiotics can wipe out beneficial bacteria, allowing harmful ones to thrive and cause SIBO.

Chronic Stress:
Stress doesn’t just affect your mental state; it can also wreak havoc on your gut. Chronic stress can alter the composition of your gut microbiome, potentially leading to SIBO as well as other digestive issues.

Dietary Factors:
What you eat plays a significant role in your gut health. Diets high in refined sugars, processed foods, and low in fiber can encourage the growth of bacteria that promote SIBO.

Underlying Health Conditions:
Conditions like celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can create an environment in the small intestine that’s more favourable for bacterial overgrowth.

While SIBO can be challenging to deal with, understanding how it can sneak into your gut is the first step in managing and preventing it. Whether it’s addressing lifestyle factors, dietary choices, or underlying health conditions, there are ways to reduce your risk of developing SIBO and improve your gut health. Remember, it’s always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance and treatment if you suspect you have SIBO.

Food intolerance is a massive buzzkill especially when it comes to socialising, travelling and experiencing all the food life has to offer! But for those who experience histamine intolerance, it’s a reality that can turn a delightful dining experience into a digestive nightmare. This article is a run down of histamine intolerance, exploring what it is, its symptoms, common triggers, and practical tips for living well while managing this condition. All of these things will be expanded on in other articles.

Histamine is a naturally occurring chemical compound found in our bodies and various foods. It plays essential roles in the immune system, regulating stomach acid, and neurotransmission. In some individuals, however, their bodies struggle to process histamine efficiently, leading to histamine intolerance.

Histamine intolerance is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed. It’s not an allergy or an autoimmune condition. Instead, it’s a metabolic disorder characterised by the inability to break down histamine properly, leading to an accumulation of this compound in the body. When histamine levels exceed the body’s capacity to metabolize it, various symptoms can start.

Common Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance symptoms can vary widely among individuals and may mimic other digestive or allergic conditions. Some common symptoms include:

Gastrointestinal Distress: Abdominal pain, Bloating, Diarrhea, Nausea

Skin Reactions: Hives, Itchy skin, Flushing, Eczema

Respiratory Issues: Runny or congested nose, Sneezing, Coughing, Wheezing

Headaches and Migraines: Intense, throbbing headaches, Sensitivity to light and sound

Cardiovascular Symptoms: Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), Low blood pressure, Dizziness

Fatigue and Sleep Disturbances: Chronic fatigue, Insomnia

Menstrual Issues: Menstrual cramps, Irregular periods

Common Triggers of Histamine Intolerance

To manage histamine intolerance effectively, it’s crucial to identify and avoid common triggers. Here are some of the most common culprits:

High-Histamine Foods: Fermented foods (e.g., sauerkraut, kombucha, kefir). Aged cheeses (e.g., cheddar, parmesan). Processed meats (e.g., salami, pepperoni). Vinegar and vinegar-containing foods. Alcoholic beverages, particularly wine, champagne, and beer.

Histamine-Releasing Foods: Certain fruits (e.g., strawberries, bananas, avocados), spinach, tomatoes and chocolate.

Leftovers: Histamine levels in foods increase as they age. Leftover meals can be high in histamine.

If you suspect you have histamine intolerance or have been diagnosed with it, there are practical steps you can take to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life:

Dietary Modifications: Adopt a low-histamine diet, which involves avoiding high-histamine foods and histamine-releasing foods. Pay attention to food freshness and avoid leftovers whenever possible. Cook meals from scratch using fresh ingredients to have better control over histamine levels.

Supplements: Consult a healthcare professional about taking supplements. There are many supplements that can assist with histamine intolerance.

Probiotics: Certain probiotic strains can help balance gut flora and support histamine breakdown. Some probiotics will make histamine intolerance worse so do your research and consult your practitioner.

Stress Management: Stress can worsen histamine intolerance symptoms. Practice stress-reduction techniques like meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises.

Keep a Symptom Diary: Tracking your food intake and symptoms in a diary can help identify specific triggers and patterns.

Consult a Healthcare Professional: If you suspect histamine intolerance, consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and guidance.

Histamine intolerance may complicate your foodie adventures, but it doesn’t have to define your life. By understanding histamine intolerance, identifying triggers, and making mindful dietary and lifestyle choices, you can successfully manage its symptoms and enjoy a more comfortable and fulfilling life. Remember, histamine intolerance is highly individual, so what works for one person may not work for another. Be patient, seek professional guidance, and focus on finding a balance that allows you to live your life without the unwanted side effects.
